I am picturing the poor woman dragging a whole cow skin and beating Barnitz with it. Either she was a strong woman or it was just a piece, like a sort of whip? I feel quite sorry for her, as she must have been quite desperate to resort to such measures.

Edit: A cowskin is, indeed, a whip, according to the dictionary.

So relieved it wasn't just me! OH my, it would be shocking in 2016. 1862? Sunday School positions were pretty sacred inside a church's social pecking order, not like today when it can be tough to find teacher. He would have humiliated her beyond taking away something she loved. OH wait- bet a gazillion dollars the local paper printed the source of their dispute.

You could read every paper between 1862 and now, it'd be difficult to find an article this good.

Mine too! Got the latest variation of it - pepper gel! Sticks to the assailant's face and won't blow around like the spray on a windy day attacking you!

Best past time ever, browsing era papers- you never, ever know what you'll find! This was just too, too priceless not to share with all of you. And it's terrible. For some reason my sympathies lie with her, don't ask me why.
