This LOC photo has the following description. Stereographs show the 134th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, under the command of John C. Bigelow, during their 100 day garrison duty at Columbus, Kentucky, from May to October 1864. This 100 day regiment was intended to free up front-line troops by taking on the critical tasks of guarding the Mobile & Ohio Railroad (of which Columbus was the northern terminus), bridges, forts, and prisoners of war. These stereographs document the soldiers in camp - in practice drills but particularly in their free time, playing cards, boxing, and reading. Some of the images show young African American boys, possibly employed by the soldiers to help with camp duties.

My kind of civil war duty. 100 days guarding the Northern end of the railroad when all the activity is south. So, what's a man of leisure drink? I zoomed in and enhanced the photograph.

A tall bottle of Log Cabin syrup? A few minutes later I found it. It's Drake's Plantation Bitters.

I thought it would be cool to own the bottle, but they sell for around $500 on ebay. So, unless there is a Chinese look-alike, I'll settle for a picture.

They excavated a riverboat that sank in 1865. Drake's Plantation Bitters was among several types of bitters.
