Description reads as an unidentified 2nd Maine Cavalry soldier with mascot. Has the mascot been identified in anyone's research?

After a bit of searching around what little I could find was that the 2nd Maine served with General Asboth during the Battle/Raid of Marianna and that Asboth seems to have used dogs as well, so maybe this could be one of them?
