There are 3 Dahlgrens in Mackinaw City , Michigan that are claimed to be from the Hartford , but are apparently not . There are 3 guns from the Hartford in Michigan , one each in Cheboygan , Gaylord and Petoskey . I stopped in Gaylord yesterday and got a few images of that one

There is another supposed one in Hagerstown MD. They are all numbered so finding out if they were actually on the Hartford should be easy enough.

Hello, everyone, a new cadet reporting in. I took the photo posted by ucvrelics about 30 years ago. The 9-inch Dahlgren was located in the corner of the parking lot of a Ramada Inn that the wife and I were staying on a vacation trip. What I found amusing is that the building across the street is (or was) a Holiday Inn! I contacted the motel a couple of years ago to inquire if the cannon was still there; they informed me it wasn't and nobody on the motel staff knew what happened to it. I have a request in to the local historical society to see if they any info; as soon as I get a reply, I'll post it here. Glad to be aboard.

Welcome to the group from middle Alabama, it is good to have you join us. I know that the motel business is cut throat, but this was carrying it to an extreme. :bounce:

Here's some more pictures of the Hartford guns in Mackinaw City, and the lovely tablet that is a tribute to those who served from the region, courtesy of my mother (who was up north to close up the cabin for the winter).

I'm interested by the possible questions into their provenance, Kurt. Do we have any records of what guns were aboard USS. Hartford during the war? I am fairly certain these gun are from the post war period (the use of 9 in nomenclature on the trunnions, I thought the Navy was still counting in roman (IX) at the time!). But given Hartford lasted into the 1950s before sinking as a dilapidated hulk at dock (It's such a shame she wasn't preserved) it's not implausible they were part of her armament, just maybe not during the war.

There was a previous thread on the Mackinaw Dahlgrens ( I think by Major Bill ) and some one posted that the guns at Mackinaw were actually from a fort in New York . I then found information on the internet that said the same thing . I don't have any information as to what the numbers on the Hartford were . The one in Gaylord is numbered 250 . If anyone could help us on that it would be greatly appreciated . BTW I was in northern Michigan this past weekend and the colors were near peak .

I was there as well! When we left on Saturday, the colors going south on I75 were amazing...These cannons are so interesting.. and they are just sitting there for anyone to come up and fawn over. Which I like. More info would be great. I'm a member of the Mackinac Associates, so I can pass any information onward.

I found that the gun at Petoskey is a Cyrus Alger numbered 249 and the one in Cheboygan is Cyrus Alger numbered 225.

Thank you for the info. I have vacationed up there all my life and never really noticed the cannons! Well, until my son caught the CW history bug that is!

I knew about the Petoskey one , but not the Gaylord or Cheboygan one . Usually we get off I-75 at Grayling to get to our place in Antrim County . Sometimes we get off at the Gaylord exit but we head west and the gun is east of the expressway on Main St .

I found the thread in the artillery forum . Major Bill posted "Does this cannon need to go on a diet?" Mark F Jenkins replied that according to Olmstead Stark and Tucker in the book "The Big Guns" the Dahlgrens at Mackinaw were from a fort in Sacket's harbor and there is no evidence they were ever mounted on a ship .

Interesting! I'd love to read primary source on them.

Ah, Sackets Harbor, that certainly would make sense as a point of origin. There was a Naval Station there at the time, hence the naval guns being there.

We had this discussion at Vicksburg, that there seems to be more reported guns across the country that supposedly came from the Hartford than what was actually on her.
