Funny thing, I have a couple pics of HF from a distance that I almost posted to the Shenandoah Valley thread the other day. So I'll post them here instead!

I had always thought that, having occupied Maryland Heights, Loudon Heights and Bolivar Heights, it was all over but the shouting. Last trip through, I learned that there was a bit of a stuggle going on down in the flats. But, let's face it, once those places were taken, it was all over.

And Littlestown, you'd love the hike up Maryland Heights - a good, steeeeeep climb! (Well, as long as you're not hauling a 100 pound Parrott up there. I can't begin to imagine how they did that!). I believe I remember seeing that Lincoln climbed it, at least part way, when he was President. Loudoun Heights is a nice climb too. Great vistas from the tops of both.

I've been going there since I was young. Always enjoyed it. Always knew about the uprising but never enough about the battles fought there. I admit I was a bit jarred when I saw it standing in for Fredericksburg in Gods and Generals.

Interesting side note...the last time I was there we had an International Scout with us from Scout Africa. We went through the Museum and later we discussed the idea that some thought John Brown was insane. She became incensed at the idea. "He was NOT crazy. He was a GREAT MAN!" I guess it is all about perspective.

Well, I'll agree that he wasn't insane. Did you take her to the John Brown monument?

Probably. Its been a few years and we went all over the place despite the heat.

While there our son was mistaken for a living historian. He was wearing black pants, black shirt and a black leather vest and a hat and he is not a goth. Why he was wearing black in that heat I don't know...teen-agers. People asked him if they could take his picture.

Brass, great photos as usual. Did you get to go up to Schoolhouse Ridge? That was my favorite part--and frankly, the part that helped me understand the battle best.....and the view.....you can read Jackson's mind very clearly. Thanks, Nate. I wanted to get to Schoolhouse Ridge, but as is always the case at Harpers Ferry and the Valley, there's never enough time in the day. I might have a chance to get back there in the next few weeks though.
