Happen to note some of your respondents were writing about "Berdan's 1st US Sharpshooters Company I. My great grandfather was one of the members of that unit. His, "Comrads of the Battle Field" award lists all of the battles he was in. It shows 308 days under fire. He corresponded with Hiram Berdan, providing he and Capt. Stevens with detailed information for Stevens to write the book, "Berdans United States Sharpshooters". (this book can be downloaded free on the internet). Several of his articles were placed in the book, including his picture page 310. He was in the group of the famous 100 sent out on the 2nd of July at Gettysburg.
I noted one person was asking what the sharpshooters duties included during the war. If you care to read pages from page 464 - 468 or so you will understand that one of there main duties were to silence artillery. Hope you find it interesting. That's just one of the narrow escapes Eli Cook of Company I had. Some how he made it all the way through. One bullet grazed his shoulder, killing the guy behind him. My e-mail is [email protected]
