It was completed shortly before the war and the frequent bridge burnings and property damage caused it financial hardship which led to it being acquired by the C.B. and Q. Several small battles were fought on its line including battle of Monroe Station and Battle of Shelbina. The notorious Centralia massacre occurred on a separate but connected line the North Missouri Railroad.

This RR is one of the reasons Lyon wasn't reinforced and ordered to fall back before Wilsons Creek as there were still several thousand State Guard in northern Missouri who were continually threatening this the only rail connection across the state to kansas

I lived very close to the Hannibal St. Joseph near Macon County. I lived within 10 miles of the North Missouri Railroad also. I think they removed the NMRR rails and ties in the 90's. The rail bed is still there. In the 80's I saw an original rural rail depot for the H & St. Jo, it was located outside of Palmyra originally. It was built in the 1850's. It was located in a small type of park, there was an admission cost. At the same park, was a blockhouse built during the war, which protected a railway bridge on the H & St. Jo. I don't know if either building still exists.

When I was a kid there was a old tourist attraction/museum at Hannibal called the Old South River Fort, It was orginally south of Palmyra to guard the RR bridge during CW, but its all gone now.

Years ago there was a series of RR pewter mementos
