I just bought these two items relating to Greenbrier county. The first is Confederate bond for $500 to Samuel P. Hawver, March 28, 1864. Mr. Hawver was clearly a man of true faith. The signature is John Withrow, an attorney, whose brick house was transformed into the General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg, WV.

The other is a letter from AWG Davis from the headquarters of Brig. Gen. John Floyd, Nov. 4, 1861, asking what he [unknown] did with the $2000 he was given to buy horses. I haven't transcribed the letter yet. The letter is folded 3 times and on one folded side it is addressed to "Samuel Hawver, Esq., Lewisburg, Va", with a corner note "M. Dolson". AWG Davis was Floyd's quartermaster, later became quartermaster in Greenville, SC, in 1862-3. He left service and died at his home, The Cliffs, in Lewisburg.
(Later edit)
Reading the letter now I had thought it was to Floyd, but it seems to be someone else. I thought perhaps Mr. Hawver but he is named as a third party in the letter, not the recipient of the money. So perhaps it is M. Dolson who was given the money.
