Grant Grant's Summer White House....

Long Branch got its start as a resort in the 1830s and by the mid-to-late 19th century was The Place to spend the summer. Many actors and performers (incl. Edwin Booth) and 19th "jet setters" owned homes or rented rooms there. Winfield Scott was a frequent visitor for nearly 20 years beginning in the 1840s. It's fame as a resort grew when Mary Lincoln visited in 1861 and the news made the papers. Presidents Grant, Hays, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison, McKinley and Wilson spent their summers there. Grant's Long Beach home was purchased for him by wealthy supporters in 1869. His last visit was in 1884 following the failure of the Grant and Ward investment firm. Garfield was on his way to Long Branch when he was shot at the railroad station in Washington and was later taken there in hopes that the fresh air and quiet would help him recover. Garfield died in Long Branch on September 19, 1881.

As an aside, the Long Branch Saloon of Dodge City and Gunsmoke fame was given its name by William Morris, its first owner, a Long Branch NJ native.
