Grants Command Post

Where was Grants command post at the siege of Vicksburg? Vaughn

Grant's H.Q. site is in the N.E. part of the Vicksburg NMP. Grant stayed in a humble wood frame house until he was awakened early in the morning of May 22nd. 150 volunteers from Sherman's Corps had removed wood planks from the house to make scaling ladders. They would be taking part in the attack of May 22nd known as "The Forelorn Hope". These men, all volunteers, charged the Confederate held Stockade Redan that morning. 81 of that 150 were awarded the Medal of Honor for their efforts......Grant, intially was outraged at the intrusion and vandalism until he was informed of their intent. He was humbled. From that point up until the siege concluded, Grant stayed in a tent.

@Tom Hughes , I'm assuming this an old post War photo of the Shirley House ?

If so, I was not aware (or more likely forgot) that Grant originally used it as his HQ.
Its not a photo of the Shirley house but the house Grant used where the monument of Grants sits.

That sure looks like a post-war photo of the Shirley House. I was not aware that Grant ever had his H.Q. at the Shirley House. That house was occupied by the 45th Illinois Infantry and more than likely the highest Union commander that occupied it would've been General "BlackJack" Logan. But it is labeled as Grant's H.Q. ......I'm almost positive that's the Shirley House in that photo. The Shirley House is the ONLY wartime structure that remains in the park....Okay, I'm POSITIVE that this is the Shirley House. You can still see the remains of the Union approach trench running through the front yard.....and I'm 100 percent sure that Grant never made his H.Q. there...Grant's H.Q. was far to the rear of the lines. If you pull a map of the VNMP you can see where he had his tent in relation to where the Shirley House was located within earshot of the 3rd LA Redan.
It's interesting to note, that the Confederates when they fell back into their defensive works were ordered to burn all the houses and buildings in their front. The Shirley House outbuildings were all burned but the house. The soldier assigned to burn the main house was shot by a Union soldier before he could apply the torch, thus we have the house today.

Thanks !

I thought so as well.

Most of the architectural and terrain features are a perfect march for the Shirley House.
I think Grant's equestrian statue marks the site of his "behind the front lines" tent.

It has to be Grants HQ. The Library of Congress can't be wrong:cold:
