After finishing his memoirs, Grant asked to be brought down to the overlook to see the view. He was wheeled down in the Bath wagon seen in post #7. A marker sits on the site where he looked out over the valley.

Mark Twain said this lookout presented the "grandest scenery" that his knew of in the United States. It was too hazy for us to see the distant mountains, but the view was still stunning. During Grant's funeral service, cannons were fired from this point.
