My impression from the caption is that Grant is the one standing beside the man in the light-colored hat (who is McClernand).

Of course, neither one of them appears to be in uniform.

Found a bit larger version. Grant is standing in the center, with his right side slightly turned toward the camera. The man in the light colored hat next to him is McClernand.
