Grant and Vicksburg

Welcome from the Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing Forum and North! To better understand the Vicksburg Campaign you should visit the park and see and experience the terrain. It is simply difficult to understand the battle and campaign without visiting Vicksburg and it is a lovely town and park to see.

Grant's attempt from the North and inland were all defeated. South was the only route he didn't try, but that required marching through Louisiana and having Porter sail past Vicksburg to rendezvous with him and ferry his army across the Mississippi River.

I have heard that the Confederate soldiers at Vicksburg were superior to the Union soldiers and that Grant was out generaled by the Confederate generals during the Vicksburg Campaign and Grant only won because he greatly out numbered the Confederates.

Well, you'll hear all kinds of things. I think that when Grant crossed the river the rebel forces in play were about equal to Grant's, maybe a little higher even. I'm going off the top of my head in this assertion.

IMO the Army of the Tennessee was, overall, the best army of the war. The absolute best was the Army of the Potomac at the very end of the war, once Grant and Sheridan finally had it tuned up.
