Grant - 4 Star General

Zuzah did this version two years ago. Here is my take on it.

This is post war, Grant was the first person promoted to 4 stars (July, 25, 1866) a rank he held until becoming President March 4, 1869.

Grant was actually pretty easy, the carpet was a real pain.

I am still not 100% happy with it, so it may change later. I really have no idea what the colors are on the original carpet and when you look at it magnified 100% (the version posted here is only about 25% scale even when maximized) it is hard to tell what you are looking at, is that a flower, what color should it be, I kind of went all over the place. If you look at Zuzah's version he only used two colors for the carpet, much simpler. I tried that as well, but did not like it as much as a floral pattern.

Well, at least in the version you posted it looks very good. It reminds me very much of a carpet my Grandma had.
I like that green very much but if you say you have no idea about the real colour, I would suggest it would maybe rather be some sort of bordeaux red, like these Persian carpets. They are mostly based on dark red with sand coloured patterns. Just a thought, though, I like the way you did it very much!

I went with green because it had a bunch of flowers in it. I even Googled "green carpet flower pattern" and found this that I loosely based it on. It is easy enough to change though, so I could try both.

My Avatar is my GGGrandfather John Wesley Knott, as I note in my signature line he was a private in the NC State Troops. His image is actually displayed at Gettysburg in the museum at the visitor center. He fought in the battle and was taken prisoner of war in November of 1863 at Rappahonnock Station. Of the three ancestors, that I know of, that served during the war he is the only Confederate and the only one that I have a image of during the war. Just wish it was better (and larger).

Armistead went into Pickett's Charge with his hat on the point of his sword so that his men could see him and follow! Of course in the movie, the sword went through the hat and was halfway down the sword by the middle of the charge!

Ahh! I remember that now. Nope, just a relative. Not sure if his unit was in the charge or not.

I think he is looking at his cigar smoldering just out of reach. Just can't wait for the photo shoot to be over so he can get back to it!

Thanks so much! Agreed on the look on his face, I think you had to be really patient to get your picture taken back then. Not as many "selfies" in the 19th Century.

I was just in Gettysburg and had my photo taken with an authentic 1863 camra. We had to sit motionless for 18 seconds once the picture was taken. It was a tin type. Really cool we have the tin framed. It's just like a negative the image is in reverse on the tin.

I hope this is ok to do, I really liked this guy R.J Gibson Studio's 65 Steinwehr Ave Gettysburg, PA. He is very good. He has taken tins of a lot of the actors in the movie. He is personally acquainted with Steven Lang and Sam Elliott. He was in the movie Gettysburg as one of Bufford's aids. So there is my plug. It's an awesome experience.
