You just knew it. None of Godey's Lady's Books I could find ' did ' Valentine's Day like we may be used to magazines ' doing ' it. None of the endless hearts, flowers, cupids, doodles, pinks and magentas. They do just fine however- stories, a few spreads, a wedding dress here and there. Did not have access to all the issues but did not look- 1861-1865 were the target years. Found Feb., 1862. Pictures are from other issues, am unsure which.

Am adding non-Godey frou-frou just for the sake of the day.

Well, it's one of those long, rambling, Victorian love stories I did not believe anyone would wish to take the time to read. It is however from Godey's Lady's Book, smack in the middle of the war- for Valentine's Day. Kind of nice to think of magazine subscribers forgetting their daily lives and getting lost in a good romance.

Thanks for the lovely Valentine's Day tribute via Godey's and what a fun story! I'm sure the ladies appreciated the diversion. I honestly didn't know it was such a big deal back during the Civil War. And here I thought the cards and gifts were a more modern invention.
