I believe the scene itself was filmed at Gettysburg, not Antietam.

The Antietam battle scene, according to an article on the production in the Civil War Times Illustrated, was filmed in McDonough, Georgia. I see on the web, that the location has since been developed, as the Wesley Lakes subdivision, and particularly where a Kroger supermarket is today.

There are evidently a couple of shots thrown in, filmed at the Gettysburg reenactment of 1988:

Was Shaw's body recovered and returned to his family? I have a Confederate ancestor killed on Morris Island. His body was interred in NC. However I don't know exactly when.
The mass grave which held his body along with his men was dug up and the remains were reinterred in Beaufort, SC after the war.

I forgot what the opening scene depicted even though I catch pieces of the movie every so often. They were advancing up an incline so I would have said it was Marye's Heights. That is too late in the war.
Also, the movie showed the Rebs behind a barricade of some type which they didnt have at Antietam.

BTW, I may post my movie souvenir booklet on CWT soon.

If I remember correctly Shaw's family was given the opportunity to bring his body home to their family plot and they refused, saying he should be with his men.
