I ended up in Glasgow, Kentucky for a brief period this weekend which has some cool Civil War history. The town features a reconstructed Civil War fort, was the site of multiple skirmishes/battles and was occupied by both sides during the war. I didn't spend a ton of time in the town except to see a few sites and grab lunch but wanted to share the photos I took.

On a side note, for those of you that may consider visiting, I arrived there during lunch time and it didn't appear to offer much in the ways of restaurants/bars/pubs. I try to get to local joints not only to support local businesses but I know they need the patronage right now but everything was pretty closed up and Yelp wasn't much help (ended up at one of those chain places to grab a couple beers and a quick bite). Asked a few locals while fueling and they said the places they'd recommend were currently closed due to COVID-19 :frown:

That said, if you're on I-65 in southern Kentucky this is a quick detour with good roads and is in very close proximity to other notable Civil War sites.

The reconstructed Fort Williams overlooks the city cemetery which is the final burial place of BG Joseph Lewis who commanded the 1st Kentucky Brigade "Orphan Brigade" at the close of the war.

In downtown Glasgow there are a number of markers and a Confederate Monument located outside the county courthouse.

Awesome photos!

I am glad I didn't discourage you from visiting this area. I just wouldn't go out of my way. This town was on our way to our next venue when my son and I were touring sites in Kentucky in 2016.

No worries, had time left today and figured I'd just do it and was kind of impressed at the work the town had put into reconstructing the fort even if there's not a ton there. Was more bummed about Munfordville if you haven't seen my reply to your thread on that battlefield yet.

I didn't realize there was a fort there. I was going to visit the area during my fall vacation this year, but COVID changed those plans.

1/4 of my ancestry runs through the Glasgow, KY area back to the early 1800s though I've never met or communicated with any of the distant relative there. Lots of people in nearby Poplar Log Cemetery that are somehow related to me.

My direct ancestor there was old enough to serve, but did not. He and his two siblings were all single adults living with their widowed mother. He did marry after the war though and his first-born child (also my direct ancestor) made it clear where his sympathies lay: Robert Lee Hargrove.

His two siblings (brother and sister) never married, but they lived together the rest of their lives. I've always wondered about that. (Is that banjo music I hear?)

I actually did a thread on this fortification many years ago but only now managed to visit. I've posted some additional photos there.

Never been to Glasgow. Seems be worth a stop if ever in Ky. Had wanted to go to Ky. this summer to see our son in Louisville. Covid sure ruined those plans. It will probably be some time before can visit.

Thanks for sharing pictures.
