Monuments Giddings,Lee County,TX

My son moved to Austin,TX in January. The drive up there from the Houston area on SH290 passes right though Giddings,TX which is the county seat of Lee County. The last coupla times I drove up there,I noticed the old county courthouse about one block west of the last traffic light intersection heading north on 290 in Giddings. Made a point to stop there on the way home Sunday,figuring there had to be a Confederate monument somewhere on the courthouse grounds. Sure enough:

Monument to General Robert E. Lee on the front side and Colonel Robert E. Lee on the back side. A fair amount of the inscription on the Colonel side is legible. Gets kinda tough at the bottom. The front side is very hard to read. See the grass at the bottom of the monument? We've had lots of rain in Texas the past few weeks and it was an overcast day. When I tried to get close to read it better,a swarm of Texas mosquitoes ascended from the grass and I was forced to retreat. Try as I may when I got home,I could not find a link/source online that had the full transcript of the inscriptions on both sides of the monument. My research also revealed that Lee County was named after Robert E. Lee. Duh!

You can see on the bottom of the Colonel side that the monument was erected by The State Of Texas in 1964. Next time I pass through there,I'm gonna have a pen and pad ready,write down the inscriptions in full and post them here. Add: Nevermind. If you enlarge the pic,it's easier to read online than it was standing there next to it. Maybe I just need new glasses.

Don't bother with writing it out!

Get yourself a 'tombstone rubbing kit' or whatever they are called - then you can take home an exact reproduction of the marker.

I use them alot, they are a cheap/excellent way to reproduce (legible) examples for your research library.

Some things just don't show up in the photos, ya know?

I've only come across 2-3 places that discourages the practice, FYI.
