I am curious if there is a book containing aerial views of the present Gettysburg battlefield. I would think such a book, especially if it also contained maps of the battle to compare with the photos, would be very enlightening and a great way to understand the topography of the area and its effect on the battle.

Also is anyone familiar with Gettysburg Battlefield: The Definitive Illustrated History? Thoughts?

Not a book, but a DVD, that might be of interest to you:

The Gettysburg Story directed and produced by Jake Boritt and narrated by Stephen Lang. The photography is spectacular! You might want to see if your library has a copy or if the interlibrary loan librarian can get a copy for you because of the price of the disc. That's a lot to pay if you don't know what you're getting in advance. That said, it may be hard to find. At the time I wanted it, only 2 libraries in Illinois had a copy, one of which was the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library whose collection is noncirculating.

I remember that one. Was there a special on the making of it or was that part of the DVD ?

If I understand your question @Kurtlg , this is an entirely different production, one that was shown on PBS, and one that has nothing to do with the movie Gettysburg. On the other hand, if you are asking if there is a special feature included on the disc on how this production was made, then the answer is "yes."

Boom! Ordered it used at the Amazon link you provided. Thanks very much! Sounds like it will be great. Now someone just needs to create that book I asked about…

Yes , I meant to ask the latter .

You can get all the aerial photos that you want by using Google Earth. Then use the overlay feature to superimpose battle maps. I do that all the time.
