How many of you remember?

I get why it came down but I bet it offered great views of the area

It did. I went up on my very first trip to Gettysburg with friends shortly after the movie came out. But I remember thinking it probably wasn't worth the eyesore at the ground level. There are plenty of natural high-ground views there of course!

It was called the National Tower, but I called it the National Blight. It served one useful purpose--you could see it from anywhere, and when I was leading tours on East Cavalry Field, you could use it to orient to the center of the Union. That sole purpose was not a reason to keep the thing, and I joyously watched it come down. Good riddance.

This would be a good topic for a new thread about what all they erected/created on the battlefield. I had heard once that there was a restaurant on LRT.
