July 1938: the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Attended by no fewer than 1800 Civil War veterans -- the youngest of whom 88 years of age. The main encampment (shown) was located on the plain between Gettysburg College and Oak Ridge -- where XI Corps fought on the first day. Carlisle Road is on the left, W. Howard Ave runs NE/SW near the bottom of this U.S.Signal Corps photo.

The picture I use as my avatar was taken at this anniversary.

Here are actual films of these grand old men, taken during the 1913 and 1938 Gettysburg Reunions:

I love that picture you have as your avatar, John. And I can't imagine how powerful it must have been to stand on that hallowed ground, where you may have fought, and seen your friends die, and you may have even fell in agony- with the people who only 70 years before had been your enemy and now were your country-men again- after WWI, and the 20s and during the height of the Great Depression. What a great tribute.
