Over the 4th I watched, once again, the film Gettysburg. When Lee was surrounded by his troops on day 3 something struck me.

Every gun that was raised in the air, had the appearance of being BRAND NEW on the stocks. No nicks, no dirt, no grime, none old. Perhaps blue-ray reveals that. But would they have spent their nights polishing the wood stocks of their guns???

Well ya'll see, you take some or yer fat pork graese and rub it into the wood and it'll shine like Uncle Fester's head.

My opinion: It's just a movie. They are all reenactors who wanted everything to look spiffy for the camera. Many scenes from Gettysburg have been picked apart by keenly observant viewers such as yourself. I never noticed the shiney gun stocks myself . . . Good eye.

When all else fails, play dead? Like that show!!!

They had to stand inspection before going into battle. Don't want to upset the Sarge! Green replacements no doubt!

I think Samuel Orris has the correct answer. The film's director or art director should have noticed something odd, but they didn't, and who cares at this point?
