With the reference to "our fathers", is it possible the President Lincoln was making a pointed remark to Genral Lee? This is also in the Lincoln thread.

Why would u think he was making a pointed remark to Lee? I think he was talking about the Founding Fathers.

Henry Lee was Revolutionary War General as well as the father of General Robert Lee. He truly was one the fathers who brought forth upon that continent a new nation. The question is if Lincoln was appealing to Lee with a direct and personal reminder.

I see what your saying now and yeah maybe he was. However I would lean more toward the writers of the Declaration of Independence as the Our Fathers.

No. The speech was made at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery- to honor the lost lives given in defense of the nation. Such a reference to one individual would have been beyond context, and inappropriate.
