Today 1993s masterpiece that is Gettysburg is exactly 26 years old - it premiered in US cinemas on this very day!

So why not use the day to show some covers and posters? Back then at the theatrical release there were posters and when if was released for home entertainment systems there came the covers. Whenever a movie gets released on a new medium, a new platform, through a new distributor, on certain dates or in another cut or edition there is a chance that it will get a new cover as well. The older the movie the more of those it will accumulate and may tell a story on its own - maybe beginning with still hand-drawn artwork before going to photographic pictures and finally digital elements. And then there are international releases as well because there is no reason keep the good stuff for yourself when it can be shown elsewhere as well and change lifes, like it did for me. I have seen the film (far too often and not often enough) and I love the film and I know many of you do, too. Does it add to the magic that I planned and began this post without knowing that it was released on this day?

It has had numerous releases on VHS (the first medium on which I saw it), DVD (got a double-sided version), Blue-ray Disc, by now also digitally and, apparently, even on Laser Disc and there are quite a few nice ones. Perhaps you have a gem to show, too?

Until noticed otherwise my pictures are from the respective entry on imdb. And should you wonder why there´s so many amazon links, they simply have the pictures easy to find and in best size and quality.

I´d asume this one to be, beside the OP poster and its variants, to be the most common one by now. Linked from here.

One variant of the aforementioned being this two-disk blu-ray director's cut anniversary edition from 2011. You´ll note that the bottom scene has become much more crowded. The picture is linked from amazon.

Here we have an apparently British complete VHS cover, linked from their amazon.

The central scene of the last one got used quite a lot as well.

For example in this overexposure French/Belgian poster, whose tagline la derniere bataille - the last battle - is slightly wrong as history showed (surprise).

Or on both sides of this widescreen Laser Disk version, linked from amazon. And even with a rating from the Playboy ...

Or this poster informing me that I can and should get the videocassette now... though I suppose I´d get a VCR and TV first. Linked from, and available through, this ebay entry.

The blue one got some nice variants as well.

For example here when Ted Turner, who already had the Gettysburg hat-trick of producing, distributing and starring (well, appearing and dying), thought that TNT could premiere a great movie in two parts on those summer evenings. Picture from this blog.

Of course it is also used for the soundtrack, like here the 2-disk Deluxe Commemorative Edition, available on amazon, a copy of which is also somewhere in my apartment. You´ll notice the subtle makeup on Longstreet`s face ...

And amazon couldn´t make it more blue I guess.

My first trip to Gettysburg was in 1992 . Although I didn't see any filming or actors , LRT was pretty much closed off and there were shrouds over many of the monuments .

Then there is this gloomy German DVD cover which I´ve never seen before, promising me the bloodiest battle in American history in 240 minutes. Interestingly they show only Jeff Daniels but relegate his name to the fine print.

And there are double features, coupling good movies with not that good movies or, far too often, not so good movies with even worse movies. Of course in this case there is an easy, and for once real, connection thanks to Gods& Generals.

Like this Limited Collector's Edition box, including lots of Schnickschnack as amazon says.

Or this German steelcase version where they wanted to make really sure we know what it is about.

Some people just make a custom cover themselves.

I´ve just no clue where they hide the double feature with Glory ... after all the idea of double features existed before Gods & Generals.
