George Lomas Regimental Quartermaster

George Lomas passed away on September 19, 2016. George was the owner of Regimental Quartermaster, a civil war sutlery located at 49 Steinwehr Ave in Gettysburg, PA. He also traveled and set up his sutler tent at most of the larger Eastern theater reenactments.

He was a fine gentleman who will be greatly missed.

He was a really nice gentleman who I had the pleasure of speaking with on several occasions. The re-enacting world has lost a gem.

Some memories...George had a collection of US 1861 lock plates from all the various contractors which he was quite proud of. He sent me some pictures of it about a year ago and I think I responded that if he found the corresponding stocks & barrels he would have another "Fuller Collection." Claud E. Fuller, author of The Rifled Musket (1958) of course had a non-pareil famous collection of all the different US 1861s.

George Lomas also produced and sold a stainless steel percussion cone (nipple) of his own design which was a superior replacement to the factory cone, especially good for US 1861s, though he offered them in all the common thread pitches. He was also a long time co-partner of the Gettysburg Anniversary Committee which put on the mainstream re-enactments there every July. The 154th event will be dedicated to his memory, according to the GAC website.

I only visited his shop once in 2009 when our Texas outfit did a weekend living history in the park, but I left with a Union waist belt and a Confederate tin drum canteen, both of which I still use regularly, including a drill this coming weekend.
