George Leo Frankenstein was an artist who traveled 3000 miles in 1866 mostly by foot visiting battlefields and painting them. He had a total of 138 painting. His story is kind of sad... He changes his last name to Frankenstein...

Here a link to his bio it a story read but his collection was sold off but he tried to find a permanent home for his painting no takers...

Frankenstein did landscapes of Civil War battlefields and little seems to realize the importance of it. He basically took snape shots of civil war before monuments and time took their toll on them.

I had to read the snippet you provided @5fish and apparently a number of the paintings that passed into the hands of a friend were donated to the National Park Service in 1948. They were distrubuted in the 1970's to National Historical and Military Parks at Appomatox (5), Fredericksburg (7), Gettysburg (3), Shiloh (1), Chickamauga (5), Region One Office NPS (3).

The change in surname (which his family apparently made on entry to the U.S.) would seem unfortunate to say the least.
