Doesn't have to be the BIG generals, but how much do you think the wives of generals - north or south - helped by just being there? I didn't realize until really getting into the CW history a couple of years ago, that at least the top officers could have their wives in camp. And I haven't seen any studies on this - certainly doesn't mean they aren't out there, but I haven't come across anything that deals with the influence of women on the leaders of the war.

I know Longstreet didn't see his wife for 2 years and Lee had months where he didn't see his (and I know she was very crippled up with arthritis), but what about all the others?

There's book on them, released not many years ago? And some threads here- but it's such a wide range that it's tough to cover. The thing is, so many get attention as " Mrs. General Lee " for instance, you miss the woman?

Hang on! I'll try to dig up some threads. A lot of them spent a good amount of time following their husbands through those years- and risking capture toboot.

Must quit here! I know there are more, if I had time at the moment to use more search words. Have to say Mary Custis Lee is a favorite of mine anyway- she's fairly overlooked and tends to be portrayed as some dried up old stick of a woman, poor Lee. Her real story is crazy good and she was astonishing.
