Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1816 and graduated from West Point in 1837. Walker went on to serve in the Seminole War where he was wounded at Lake Okeechobee. Next he was in the Mexican War where he was wounded at Churubusco and then again at Molina del Ray. Known as "Old Shotpouch", Walker then returned to teach at West Point.
During the Civil War Walker spent most of his time in the Georgia militia. In 1863 he is put in command of a division in Johnston army.
On this day in 1864 Walker's division is participating in the flanking march by Hardee's corps. At about this time he is encountering Terry's Mill Pond which proves quite an obstacle for a division to get around. He pulls his pistol on his guide, a local named Case Turner, and demands to be led around it. By 12:00 his men are around it and at around 12:15 Walker ascends a small hill. As he pulls his binoculars from their case and lifts them he is hit in the chest by a Federal skirmisher's shot and dies instantly.
