I did a little looking at Joe Wheeler's family to see if I could find out anything about the daughter connected to this story. He had five daughters and a step-daughter, Ella Sherrod. Since Forrest died 1877, we're looking for someone born about 1864.

Ella, the stepdaughter, born 1861, at seventeen is a little too old to be the girl in the story, and would probably not have referred to herself as General Wheeler's daughter. Annie, possibly Wheeler's most famous daughter, known as the "Angel of Santiago" for her work as a military nurse, was born 1868 and would have been only nine. One of the daughters died before 1877. Two were younger than Annie. It looks like the daughter closest in age to 13 was Lucy Wheeler, born 1866. She would have been eleven.

Lucy never married, caring for her family's home at Pond Springs until her death in 1924. It was hard to find a photo of her - unlike Annie, who seems to have loved the camera. The only photo I was able to find was this aggressively watermarked image from the Wheeler collection of personal papers.
