This is the building that served as Alfred Scales' law office in Madison, North Carolina prior to his election to the U.S. Congress in 1857.
When the war came he became the original Captain of Co. H of the 13th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Colonel in October 1861 and eventually became a brigade commander. After the war he was elected Governor of North Carolina.
