General Albert Sidney Johnson was a well though of military man but how did he perform early in the War?
Johnson was given an important job to hold Tennessee and although he did not have all the resources he would have liked, Johnson could have done a better job. All that might be expected was to hold the area until winter limited military operations. Then what had to be a disaster for the Confederacy first Fort Henry fell and then Fort Donnellson fell.
So is anyone to blame for this? General Johnson had P.G.T. Beauregard and General William J. Hardee as subordinates. Had Beauregard not became ill, could the area have been held until spring? What do you think of John B. Floyd replacing Beauregard? I do have to wonder if Beauregard in charge at Fort Donnellson would have made all that much difference.
So many people say the South had better generals than the North but in this cases one would have to wonder. In this area at this time of the War did the Union simply have better leaders?
