Research General Hancock a Democrat

I just found out that General WS Hancock was a Democrat and ran for office after the war for the state of Pennsylvanian? I am surprised that there wasn't that many Union democrats back then during the war. He was probably one of my only favorite Union Generals at the time of the war because he always carried out his orders and was a very good General even wounded at Gettysburg. Was it rare at that time for Union to be a Democrat during the Civil War?
