General E.W. Hincks Shoulderboards etc...

I gave a presentation recently to the Orrington Historical Society on the military career of my great, great Uncle, E.W. Hincks. A friend of a friend of a neighbor or something of his from back in the day

now possesses some of his military regalia and it was AWESOME to see and hold this stuff in my own hands.

Yes, sir. and previously the 8th Massachusetts Vols. (Three Months Men) and the 19th Massachusetts Vols.

Actually, those are NOT shoulder boards - they are full-dress epaulettes for a field-grade officer (denoted by their thicker fringes); shoulder straps are the small rectangular embroidered patches bearing the eagle (for colonel) or star (brigadier general). Those paddle-shaped items replaced the epaulettes for grades lower than generals by the new Regulations of 1872 after he had reverted to the rank of colonel following the war.
