Custer had been a Capt when he served on McClellan's staff and then reverted to 1st LT when he was assigned to Pleasonton's before his jump to BG, a five grade promotion is a record unlikely to be duplicated.

Ed Bearss was challenged by a tour member when he said that Custer was a Captain when promoted, whereupon Ed looked up Custer's service record at the National Archives and saw that Custer was a 1st LT when promoted.

I've seen that image before, probably on the Library of Congress site or such.
I have always thought that Custer was in that photo taken of Lincoln and Little Mac after Antietam. But I learned from this site that the cavalry officer in the slouch hat on the right of that photo was not him.

The sign at the photo site says the fellow on the right is Custer. he was on McClellan staff at the time. Could you direct me to where someone said that it wasn't Custer?

I never really liked Custer. Can't really explain why. I like other flamboyant CW cavalry officers just fine. He was certainly brave & was a competent officer from what I know of him. But something about the ole boy makes me wanna cheer for the Lakota! Sorry Custer ...

I hear ya. Then there was something about that photo of him and the grizzly bear he had shot that just didn't seem right.

In the late 60's Johnny Cash recorded an album of songs with American Indians as the theme. One was a comical thing about Custer. " The General, He Don't Ride Well Anymore " Part of it went :

" General Custer split his men, well, he won't do that again !
The General ,he don't ride well anymore !
Now the General's silent, he got barbered VIOLENT !
The General, he don't ride well anymore ! "

I really like his mount. Anybody know the name?

Found this:
Custer had 2 favorite horses. Vic and Dandy. Vic was a Kentucky thoroughbred and a battle horse. Vic although was high spirited had speed and quickness for fast charges and maneuverings of battle. Most feel Vic was killed along with Custer; used as a shield against the indians, while others feel Vic went AWOL.
Dandy was an extra mount and used as a pack horse. Dandy survived the attack on Reno Hill. Dandy was a sturdy little horse and could stand heat or cold and travel miles without exhaustion.
Dandy was sent to Mrs. Custer in Monroe, Michigan and she gave the horse to Custer's father. Dandy was 25 years old when he died on Custer Sr.'s and buried in the orchard.

I join you in your opinion of Custer.

The modern Sharps Rifle Company of Montana used to have a sign that featured Custer posed like James Montgomery Flagg's image of Uncle Sam pointing his finger at the reader. "I want you." However, this one read, "Help put down the militant Sioux. Join the 7th Cavalry."

It's in the photography forum, I believe. Possibly in that really looooooong one where we first started looking at photos.

At any rate, no it isn't Custere but my mind has gone blank for the moment. As Ole says, someone will come along who knows.
