This probably isn't a comprehensive biography like you're looking for as it deals largely with Garfield's assassination and the bungled attempts by his doctors to save his life. I found it to be absolutely fascinating.

Great book...I like Garfield myself but even if I didn't, I would not want anyone to suffer like he did.

I second ¨The Destiny of the Republic¨ and would add ¨The Garfield Orbit¨ as a can´t miss. You can´t beat Margaret Leech as an author. I really felt I knew Garfield from reading her.
