Hi,

I recently acquired a page from the visitors register of the GAR Post in St. Louis from 1889. I have posted it on line at https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/fo...68732-civil-war-signatures-from-gar-register/ if you would like to see it.

It lists Date, Name, Residence, Co., Regiment or Vessel, and State. So far I have identified and traced 10 of the 20 names which include Brevet General John E Phelps. I continue to work on the others.

Of course there are some names that I cannot read due to penmanship such as #4 and some I am guessing on but hope to be able to identify with the use of wildcards such as "*" in the available data bases.

My question deals with #2 on the paper. The name appears to be A. H. Bradley living in Sedalia (MO) who served on the USS Sagamore, and the state is listed as New York. I am having a tough time finding his name. The NPS database has 2 buttons, one for Soldiers and one for African American Sailors. Where are the rest of the Sailors? The NPS database apparently does not honor wildcards either. I have access to Fold3 and FamilySearch but FamilySearch does not have the ability to filter the search results like the NPS site although they do honor wildcards. And I found a few Bradley's on Fold3 but none with enough info to identify as the person on the register.

So any help on how to identify this Sailor would be appreciated.

I may have more questions as I get into this.

Thanks.

The shortcoming os the NPS Soldiers and Sailors program are oft discussed here. In fact, an effort to provide a better interface is currently on the works.

Sailors are very hard to trace, using any system. Do you know anything else about Bradley? Having detailed info on the individual sometimes make the difference.

I think that it says "N. A. Bradley" ... Nelson A. Bradley, b. 3 Oct 1840 in Oak Hill, Yates Co., New York; served on the U.S.S. Ohio from 1 Nov 1861 to 23 Nov 1861 and on the U.S.S. Sagamore from 24 Nov 1861 to 15 Dec 1864; lived in Washington, Franklin Co., Missouri in 1870.

His pension (66 pages) starts here.

I think Bob Velke is correct. What threw me was the first initial of the name does NOT look like the "N" he wrote in the state Box where he wrote "New York". Thanks.

Iupaglupa... you mention a 1890 Veterans Census, is that the same as the regular 1890 census or something else. If it is different where can I find it? Thanks.

Thanks. That is on Ancestry so I was unaware of it. I can access Ancestry at the public library, but don't have it at home.

Hi @Vincennes, I may have a few sites that could possibly help as this is a project of yours.

This last one is difficult for me to navigate but you may have better skills.
On the opposite side of the fence here, another one-
