Hello everybody, I found this while metal detecting a old house site dating back to the 1800's. After getting it home and doing some research i think it might be a GAR medal.I am from eastern long island and never expected to pull civil war items from the ground. Any input would be appreciated.

That does look like a GAR medal, but the pattern is slightly different -- it looks like it has stars and the letters G-A-R around the points of the star, rather than the more usual crossed rifles, sabres, etc. I don't know if that has any significance or not.

There is no number on it that I can see and on the tips of the bottom 3 it has G A R . I can't tell if there is or was writing around the band and the image looks similar but less detailed than the image posted by MRB1863

Well, consider the dug medal was underground for who knows how long....it would have lost detail in condition just by that. But it is still a cool find!

I think the LGAR would say that in the band, but since you can't read it, the ladies medal has individual stars on each point of the larger star. I don't believe they had GAR on their medals. I think 7th Texas may be right about the souvenir.
