I came across an anecdote in an 1861 newspaper. A young Southern bride had said goodbye to her new husband, an officer in a regiment that had marched off to one of the early battles. He was captured, and while the bride fretted over what to do next, some friends called on her. They had good news, for they had heard that her husband was to be exchanged. "Exchanged! My dear sirs, I've only just married the man! Why, whatever would I do with a Yankee for a husband?! I'll not hear of it! They may keep the Yankee and return my husband at once!"
I'm sure if Paris Hilton were to trace her genealogy back. . .
