Ft Popham Maine

I was sorting some files and came across these. Ft Popham in Phippsburg Maine at the mouth of the Kennebec River to protect the ship building at Bath.

Nice pix. I was there during a vacation about ten years ago. A more complete fort is Fort Knox on the Penobscot from the same period.

A few year ago @NFB22 posted a series of threads that he referred to as Forgotten Forts. He included Fort Popham in that number (see link) and also posted concerning a several other New England forts, including the Fort Knox mentioned above.

Fort Knox is in excellent condition and is as fine an example of a polygonal fort as I've seen. The fort has a high glacis, a covered way with traverses and impressive ditch defenses with a counterscarp gallery running the entire length of the ditch.
