A storm rolled through the immediate Fredericksburg area yesterday afternoon. I stopped by the NPS visitor center on Sunken Road this morning and thought I would share a few photos . The first, third and fourth is the large pin oak directly behind the visitor center on the Federal side of the Stone Wall

Is that pin oak a witness tree? It's always sad losing those big old trees
MY first thought was it might have been, but I am not sure. Pin oaks grow rather fast....I am looking into to it though and will let you know if I am able to come up with something. (I managed to get a small part just in case it is, but I don't think so).

If you are willing to buy an increment borer you could determine the age of the tree in rather short order. You can buy such from places like Forestry Suppliers. If you do go that route, be sure to add some years to what you read at breast height (i.e. 4.5 ft) to account for the years needed to get to said breast height. That depends on species and location but somebody at an agricultural station or state forestry school could tell you that.
