This wide-view contains the Sunken Road, a little above halfway up, Mayres Hill, on the top left, Innes house- a litle further down, and of course a ton of other landmarks I'm not swift enough to pick out. I just like Battlefield photos because I personally have a tough time visualizing what-was-where. I'd never come across this before-found it helpful, if haunting.

I see leaves on the tree, but also what looks like a bit of snow. Must have been taken in late fall or early spring if that is snow, I guess. Good picture.

Yes,this photo is from may of 1863,after Sedgwicks assault on Early. What looks like snow is rain water.Wierd, lastmonth,my buddy and I parked the car at the end of Hanover st,at the foot of Maryes heights.Did mot look at all like this, anymore. We walked the sunken road. What a magical afternoon.Funny, where the sunken road turns onto Hanover St,is Fraternity row,for the University, there.Fredericksburg is a great place to explore.Lots of ancient nooks n crannies in amongst the newer stuff.Thought about pullin up stakes once and going there to live.Too old now. Some of the developement is kinda sad,but we do what we can,I guess.Going there again in December, for Fire on the Rappahannock.Cant hardly wait.AH The 150th Antietam trip.Just a good memory, now.Did a ton of Civil war in about a days trip from Petersburg,up to Hagerstown.

Thanks for the date! The blurb listed in Fold 3, with The Brady Collection materials just says it's from 1860-1865, so wasn't able to say when it was taken. Amazing those trees survived- you'd somehow expect the entire field to be just shattered.

I notice things like that also...about how the trees and surrounding nature survives such an onslaught of destruction..amazing how life goes on.

My go-to on Fredericksburg. Sorry to keep harping on it, but if 8th graders can benefit from it, surely the rest of us can! It certainly helped me understand the battle. (Good links, pics and the animated map is superb).

I agree, they are solid, basic over-views,easy to understand, for anybody, and you can still impress people with your vast knowlege, without them knowing you arnt quite advanced enough to quite know where, exactly every regiment was at any given moment. Not disparaging anyone,as I have said before, everyone studies thier own CivilWar as thier interests dictate.I would not do as a professional guide, that way,but I can give you a pretty could sense of what happened. As you gain interest in each engagement, though, these minute details seem to come automatically. For starters, though, these animated maps are really a treasure.
