The Cotton Gin, of course, had the cotton field to the south of it, east of the Columbia Pike, which numerous Confederate brigades crossed over on their way to the Federal main line. I would assume that there were fences around those farm fields south of the town of Franklin, though I'm sure some were torn down for construction of the Federal works and abatis.
Just as AUG351 stated, nearly all of the loose railing had been disassembled and used in the construction of the Federal works as defensive obstacles. Palisades had been made by a large number of them.
Even worse was the thick growth of Osage Orange. Hopefully you can find one of the threads about these hedges. They were so thick, if the Confederates managed to get that far, they were literally grabbed one at a time, pulled through and captured.
