I was finally able to tour the battlefield at Franklin and was impressed with the work that has been done by the Battlefield Trust in securing property and restoring the area around Carter house as much as they have. My 2G Grandfather was a part of Strahl's brigade at Franklin and I was wondering if anyone knows where the 31st Tn Infantry was exactly located in the battleline. I am assuming that the 31st was somewhere near where the works bend back as their casualty numbers weren't as high as those that were being raked by the artillery and rifle fire from across the Pike and down their lines.

Franklin is the first Western Theater battlefield that I visited. I have been back 3 times since that first visit. I even got married there in November 2021. There is something new to see every time I visit there. My last visit was October 2022. I think I will wait until the new Visitor Center is open before going again.

Strahl's brigade followed Gordon's initial breakthrough and trailed behind by about six hundred yards or more. Although you can't pinpoint any specific Confederate regiment at the battle, it's safe to say that the brigade would have spread itself about a hundred yards frontage after funneling in towards the pike and original breakthrough. Probably no less than twenty yards to the east of the pike towards the Gin House and eighty or more yards to the west towards the current visitor center.

Thanks for the information Gunny. That is about what I had figured. It is a wonder anyone came out unscathed.

Baptism of Fire : The 44th Missouri, 175th Ohio and 183rd Ohio at the Battle of Franklin is a good read about some of the men your ancestor likely met in battle. Read it last year myself.

From their location on the field and where Strahl's men were, I would say there is a great probability that they "traded" a few rounds with each other.

Thinking about going to Nashville in the fall for vacation. Is it possible to get to the battlefield via public transport. I'd love to visit that battlefield. It was a very tragic affair. I was reading Sam Watkins again recently and what he leaves unsaid about the battle tells you everything you need to know about it.

Not much left of the Nashville battlefield...a few isolated sites.
