France in Mexico

If France had not been in Mexico how would that have affected the course of the conflict in the US. Would Mexico remain neutral or try to reclaim lost territory.

Even without French intervention, the internal Mexican political landscape was ensnared with rival factions that would have precluded any realistic scenario in which Mexico would seek to "regain" lost territory. The Confederacy would certainly have been eager to establish relations with whoever was in charge in order to secure safe passage to port facilities and supplies.
