Fox's Gap

People are such jack@$$es. I wish they'd take a second or two and learn about history rather than defacing or trying to remove something they disagree with.
Thank you for posting the pics!!! As many times as I've hit Antietam, I haven't hit South Mountain yet...I need to remedy that!

I visited the Fox's Gap battlefield on South Mountain last week. The setting is quiet, rural and peaceful. There was no one else there when I visited. Photos follow, for those interested.

The monument honoring General Reno looks fine.

But sadly, General Garland's monument has been badly vandalized.

The interpretive marker regarding the 13th North Carolina Infantry appears to be undisturbed.

The monument was defaced last spring, but fortunately shows little evidence of it now.

It's a beautiful place, well worth a visit if you're in the area.

South Mountain area is a splendid place to visit. My wife and I hiked down the Appalachian trail from the Reno monument north for about two miles on a sunny day. Highly recommended.

I lived about a half mile on the western side of the mountain on Reno monument Rd for almost 5 years. Spent many days and evenings in these hallowed woods and fields. For someone so ignorant to do this infuriates me !

Fox's Gap is one of my favorite areas -- the photos of the vandalism make me sick. I'm glad to see there has been some removal efforts, hopefully it will continue to fade with time.

I second the post by @LilRhody about hiking the Appalachian Trail in this area. You can also go south from Fox's Gap to Crampton's Gap, and then all the way to Weverton Cliffs and Harpers Ferry. The stretch from Fox to Crampton Gap is rather strenuous.
There is a nice overlook at White Rocks, just below Lamb's Knoll, which is the second highest point along South Mountain.

Weverton Cliffs provides a great perspective on Harpers Ferry (located down in the center of the V in the photo below; Maryland Heights on right, Loudoun Heights on left). It is relatively easy to get to Weverton Cliffs from Harpers Ferry. The Appalachian Trail in this area follows the old C&O Canal path, which is completely flat until you get near Weverton.

Fox's and Crampton's gaps are not far away . An easy trip by vehicle , I especially like the war correspondent's monument at Crampton's .

excuse me, does someone of you have a photo of the rear, or of the flank (that's with the NC flag), about the monument dedicated to the north carolina units in Fox gap ? i found one on flirck but maybe anything other show it better !

Defacing and removal of Civil War monuments was the very reason I embarked on my journey two weeks ago. In that time I was able to visit 9 battlefields and see several monuments along the way. Thank goodness I didn't see any signs of defacement or vandalism.
