Those Civil War pensions reached across nations and into later centuries. Congress repeatedly passed Acts enlarging eligibility for CW pensions

I was researching an Irish soldier, whose widow received his pension. She moved back to Ireland and continued to receive the pension there.
Congress passed a law in 1893 that removed non-resident aliens from the pension rolls. "Following the outcry, in February 1895 the 1893 provision that had impacted so many was repealed. The pensions of those still alive were duly restored"

A useful resource for finding your pensioner's residence is the "List of pensioners on the roll January 1, 1883 : giving the name of each pensioner, the cause for which pensioned, the post-office address, the rate of pension per month, and the date of original allowance, as called for by Senate resolution of December 8, 1882". https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/2709973 https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/31387/

If your pensioner lived to 1907 there is a huge, complete collection - Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards.
This would be great IF you could search by certificate number or by military unit... but NO. If you are searching a common name, you could have a couple hundred records to wade through.
  • Fold3.com search by soldier's name
  • FamilySears.org search by widow's name, state of service, enter soldier's name as "other person"
  • FindmyPast.com search by soldier's name, filter by pension type (Army/Navy, Invalid/Widow/Dependent)
