This is Corporal Francis Furman 143 PVI Co K from Wyoming County PA. He served from 1862 to 1865. They were engaged at Chancellorsville, July 1st and 3rd at Gettysburg, in the Wilderness and at various areas around Petersburg. After Gettysburg A.P. Hill said that the Yankees had fought with a determination unusual to them. He pointed out a railway cutting in which they had made a good stand; also a field in the centre of which he had seen a man plant the regimental colors, round which the enemy had fought for some time with much obstinacy; and when at last it was obliged to retreat, the color bearer retired last of all turning round every now then to shake his fist at the advancing rebels. General Hill said he felt quite sorry when he had seen this gallant Yankee meet his doom." That was the 143 PVI Color Bearer.
I found this picture recently that was said to be Francis. After more research I confirmed with the Wyoming County Historical Society it is indeed him. They have a copy in their archives. Since he was 18 when he enlisted I assume this is circa 1900. I now have photos of 4 of the 7 Furmans who served.
