I hereby certify the above return to be a correct list of the
members of the Confederate Guards, Winfield S. Featherston,
Captain, mustered into the Army of Mississippi on this Monday,
April 22, 1861, in the city of Holly Springs, county of Marshall,
state of Mississippi, as a company numbering in the aggregate
sixty-two strong, the ordinance approved January 23, 1861,
together with the ordinance adopted March 26, 1861, having been
read in their hearing.

June 7.— Muster-in roll of Captain C. W. Sears' Company G, in
the Seventeenth Regiment of Mississippi, commanded by Colonel
W. S. Featherston, called into the service of the Confederate
States in the Provisional Army under the provisions of the Act of
Congress passed February —, 1861 by President Jeff Davis
from May 27, 1861 (date of this muster) for the term of twelve
months, unless sooner discharged. . . .

November 1.— Left camp near Winchester. Marched eight miles
fording the Shenandoah.
The two following days we marched forty miles to Culpeper.
November 18.— Left Culpeper. Traveled forty-five miles fording
the Rapidan.
November 20.— Encamped near Fredericksburg in the night.
December 9.— Went on picket in Fredericksburg.
December 11.— In a very serious engagement in the city.

January 1.— We marched from camp, four miles distance, to
Fredericksburg. Remained two days and returned to camp.
January 9.— Came back to town, where we have been ever since
on provost guard.

Since last muster company has marched from Sweetwater to
Knoxville, distance forty-two miles, in pursuit of the enemy.
Stood picket then every fourth day until November 29.
November 29.— Had a severe engagement at Fort Loudon and
had success.
Five days later began the retreat from Knoxville in the direc-
tion of Bristol. During four days marched forty-five miles and
camped twelve miles from Rogersville. Remained four days, then

made a rapid march of ten miles in direction of Knoxville to meet
and whip out a squad of Yankees. Returned to camp the same
night without engagement, except with the 8-inch [gun] and never
to be forgotten mud, which we split at the rate of four miles per
hour back to camp.
Marched again early next morning in pursuit of Yanks in
same direction to Freestone Pass, Clynch Mountain. Kept guard
there eight or ten days.
Marched fifteen miles to this place five miles east of
Morristown and built quarters for the winter, which we enjoy
very much when we are not on the march.

Stationed near Richmond, Virginia, March I, 1865.
April 13, 1861.— The company was organized at Holly Springs,
Marshall County, Mississippi.
May 27.— Arrived at Corinth for rendezvous.
June 4.— The regiment (Seventeenth Mississippi) was organized.
June 12.— Left for Virginia.
June 17.— Arrived at Manassas.
July 21.— Participated in first battle of Manassas and remained in
vicinity of Centreville.
August 11.— We took up march for Leesburg, Virginia.
August 12.— Arrived at Leesburg.
October 21.— Was in battle of Leesburg. Remained near Lees-
burg.
March 6, 1862.— We took up march for Culpeper Court-House,
Virginia.
March 12.— At Culpeper Court-House we formed a junction with
the Confederate State Army in Virginia.
After the evacuation of Manassas remained at Culpeper
Court-House several days—then removed to Rapidan Sta-
tion—distance seventeen miles, where we bivouacked.
April 8.— Left for Yorktown.

April 9.— Reached Yorktown—our Army from Manassas having
been by this time all or nearly all brought to Yorktown, where we
remained.
May 3.— The evacuation by our troops commenced.
Nothing of note occurred to our command during our entire
march from Yorktown to the front of Richmond—save severe
exposure to bad weather.
May 18.— We arrived near the city and bivouacked.
May 22.— We were placed in front and remained there or nearby
till commencement of the great Seven-Days' battles, in which our
command was engaged on two occasions—Savage Station and
Malvern Hill.
After the memorable "Seven-Days' battles," in which we
were successful, our division—[Evander McIvor] McLaws, at
that time—were retained to watch the movements of the enemy
while our main Army was sent northward and was not rejoined by
us.
September 2.— Having quit our position near Richmond, we
overtook it at Leesburg, Virginia. In conjunction with the main
Army, we then made the Maryland Campaign.
September 13.— Participated in the battle of Maryland Heights.
September 15.— Participated in the capture of Harper's Ferry.
September 17.— Participated in the battle of Sharpsburg, after
which time our Army was withdrawn to Winchester, Virginia.
September 21.— Arrived at Winchester and remained.
October 21.— Went to Culpeper Court-House.
October 24.— Arrived at Culpeper Court-House.
November 19.— Left for Fredericksburg.
November 20.— Arrived at Fredericksburg, where we remained
on picket and garrison duty around and in the city.
December 11.— The city was furiously bombarded while our
brigade—then Barksdale's—was in it. We held, unaided, the
city, till ordered to give it up, having borne the brunt on Decem-
ber 11, we were not withdrawn until December 13.
December 13.— A general engagement took place in which we
participated.
Remained near Fredericksburg.
May 3, 1863.— We participated in the battle of Chancellorsville.
June 3.— Left for Pennsylvania.

July 2-3.— Participated in battle of Gettysburg.
July 16.— Returned to Virginia.
September 10.— Left for Army of Tennessee.
September 18.— Arrived.
September 20.— Participated in battle of Chickamauga.
November 7.— Left for Knoxville, Tennessee.
November 29.— Participated in battle of Knoxville.
April 19, 1864.— Left East Tennessee for Virginia.
May 6.— Participated in battle of Wilderness.
May 8-12.— Participated in battle of Spotsylvania.
June 1, 3-4.— Participated in battle of Petersburg.
June 19.— Left for the Valley.
August 6.— Participated in battles.

Stationed at Brucetown, Virginia, July-August 1864.
