We often read of the water the men had to drink. Often green or worse. This is in Arkansas, Ashley's Mills. Army of Arkansas stopped here on the way to Little Rock.

Has there ever been a case of a bunch of soldiers dropping out of the firing line due to vomiting, throwing up, stomach cramps etc? Just looking at some of that "water" makes me sick to my stomach.
There'd definitely be a real chance with non moving, livestock using good old pond water.
This is a good article about health in the camps- don't read after just eating if you're squeamish. (Daddy collected Civil War era blood letting devices, saws, pliers, etc. and I loved playing with them. )
Crawford W. Long developed anesthesia in my hometown.( Athens, GA) Seems the frat boys wanted to up the level of getting high at parties and Long showed up with a concoction that when administered knocked the guy out. They kicked him and he still didn't wake up. When he finally came to, he had no memory of being kicked and voila! Anesthesia was born.

Ford at the Mine Creek Battlefield, where Major General Price's wagon train got mired in mud and rocks in October 25, 1864.

Amazed the ford area is so well preserved. Is this an area where one would be allowed to search for finds? Can't help but wonder what might've gotten shaken off and into the creek from being caught on the rocks.

This made me think of Doctor's Creek at Perryville in Kentucky. With the drought that season it had to be rather stagnant.
Lubliner.

Was there a couple weeks ago, will look through my photos. By far one of my favorite CW battlefields and I've been to A LOT. Its so untouched its hard not to love it.
