Shortly after Charleston, SC surrendered to Union forces on February 18, 1865, photographer George N. Barnard visited James Island and made this image of a water battery in Fort Johnson. The guns in the photograph are (from top to bottom): M1841 8-inch howitzer, M1844 10-inch banded and rifled Columbiad, 7-inch double-banded Brooke rifle and 10-inch Confederate Columbiad. The carriages have been damaged to prevent reuse. The field carriage to the left is thought to have been used for transporting mortars. Fort Sumter can be seen on the horizon.
